A Bit of Bad, A LOT of Good
Okay, this one may be a bit confusing. If I don't explain it so you can understand, please let me know so others can understand it also.
I had my scans and stuff this week. I had a PET scan which shows the activity of the tumors. Most cancer tumors absorb sugar and they inject me with a radioactive sugar. This determines how active the tumors are. This PET scan showed that my tumors are much less active than they have been in the past. The conclusion is that they are actually dying.
Now, when the middle part of the tumor dies, the outside of the tumors swell. They will swell to a certain point then disintegrate. So, my major tumors are much larger due to swelling. Great news!
There is always a but, so here it is... The way that this drug works is that it cuts off the blood supply to the tumors which is supposed to make them shrink then disintegrate. So, in the protocol (rules) for this drug, once the tumors reach a certain size, you will no longer be eligible for this medication.
It took the research team an hour to figure out what to do. My tumors are dying, but not the way that they thought they would. They ended up going by the rules and ended my time on this study.
The bad part of this is that I now have to find another treatment. The good part of this is that I cannot start another treatment for a minimum of 30 days. So, the next month will be free of side effects and I should have my energy back. YAY!!!
In the meantime, I will be researching my other options. I will be making a trip back to Ann Arbor in about two weeks to see if they are aware of any other options available.
What should you pray for??? I guess continued healing, and wisdom to chose the next best treatment.
Thank you so much for your love and support!
Heather
